The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 16 named lakes, divided into the Upper Lakes and the Lower Lakes, and more than 90 waterfalls. The highest of them is Veliki Slap, which is 78 metres high. The water changes colour with the minerals, the time of day and the angle of the sun, so you will see shades from clear blue to deep emerald green.

The lakes are connected by waterfalls that form as water deposits calcium carbonate and builds natural barriers called tufa. This process has been going on for thousands of years and it continues today. The forests around the lakes are home to brown bears, wolves, lynx and many bird species.

Wooden boardwalks and trails lead you right above the water, so you can get close to the waterfalls and take photos from many viewpoints. The paths can be crowded in high season, so plan some extra time.

What you need to know when visiting Plitvice

The tour price does not include the park entrance tickets. You can buy them at the entrances, but we recommend buying them online in advance because they can sell out in busy periods. The ticket includes the boat ride and the panoramic train, which depend on weather conditions and are not always available.

The park has strict rules to protect its fragile ecosystem. Feeding or disturbing animals, littering, leaving the marked trails, taking natural souvenirs, making fires, camping, swimming and fishing are not allowed.
